Dr. Samuel L. Perry is Sam K. Viersen Presidential Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Oklahoma. He is a graduate of Augusta University and of Dallas Theological Seminary, and he holds an M.A. in Social Sciences and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago.
An award-winning scholar and teacher, Dr. Perry is among the nation’s leading experts on conservative Christianity and American politics, race, families, and sexual behavior. He has been recognized as among the top sociologists in the world in terms of research productivity and impact.
Dr. Perry is the author of Addicted to Lust: Pornography and the Lives of Conservative Protestants (2019) and Growing God’s Family: The Global Orphan Care Movement and the Limits of Evangelical Activism (2017). He is co-author (with Philip S. Gorski) of The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy (2022), and (with Andrew L. Whitehead) of Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States (2020). He has also published numerous scholarly essays, and given numerous lectures, presentations, and workshops.
Dr. Perry’s new book, coming out this month, is Religion for Realists: Why We All Need the Scientific Study of Religion.
